It is well know that many substances have different structures in the crystalline state and they exhibit first-order structural phase transitions by a change in pressure. On the other hand, pressure-induced structural changes in the liquid and glassy states were supposed to be monotonous. The recent development of synchrotron radiation sources enables us to perform structural studies on liquids and glasses under high pressure and high temperature conditions. These studies revealed that the changes in the liquid and glassy states are not necessarily monotonous. We will present recent results on liquid phosphorus and silica glass.

Macroscopic Separation of Dense Fluid Phase and Liquid Phase of Phosphorus

Structural transformation between two liquid structures of phosphorus that occurred at about 1 GPa and 1000$$^{circ}$$C was investigated by in-situ X-ray radiography. When the low-pressure liquid was compressed, dark and round objects appeared in the radiograph. X-ray diffraction measurements confirmed that these objects were the high-pressure liquid. The drops grew and eventually filled the sample space. Decompressing caused the reverse process. The macroscopic phase separation supported the view that it was a first-order liquid-liquid phase transition. X-ray absorption measurements revealed that the change in density at the transition is about 40 % of the density of the high-pressure liquid.

Combination of synchrotron radiation sources and large volume presses enable us to make in-situ observations of structural change in liquids and glasses at high pressures up to several GPa and high temperatures up to 1500K. A number of methods, X-ray diffraction, XAFS, density measurement by means of X-ray absorption, viscosity measurements by means of radiography, are now applicable for this purpose. We have systematically studied elemental liquid and found that a characteristic structural change occurs in a narrow pressure-temperature range in liquid selenium. Moreover we have found a sudden structural change in liquid phosphorus. Experimental results on phosphorus support a view that the change is a first-order liquid-liquid transition. In the talk, results of current attempt to detect sudden structural change in silica glass will be presented. A preliminary result of X-ray diffraction study on liquid water under high-pressure will be also reported.

Reparability of lethal lesions produced by phosphorus photoabsorption in yeast cells

The characteristics of DNA lesions produced by the phosphorus K-shell absorption in yeast cells were studied using monochromatized soft X-rays tuned to the phosphorus K-edge peak (2153 eV) and below the peak energy (2147 eV). The repaired fractions of DNA double-strand breaks (dsb) were measured relatively by using both a mutant, (${it rad 54-3}$), which shows the temperature-sensitive dsb repair-deficient, and a wild-type strain. The repaired fraction of lesion in ${it rad 54-3}$, which corresponds to the relative yield of dsb reparable by the ${it RAD 54}$ pathway, was not affected by the phosphorus photoabsorption. Repair of the produced lesions in the wild-type cells was also measured by comparing the surviving fraction of the immediately plated cells to that of those cells plated after holding in a non-nutrient medium for 80 hrs. The recovery of the surviving fraction after the holding treatment was dependent upon the soft X-ray energy. These results suggest that irrepairable lesions are produced by the inner-shell photoabsorption of phosphorus in DNA, although its yield is small.

Non-equilibrium intergranular segregation and embrittlement in neutron-irradiated ferritic alloys

Kameda, Jun*; Nishiyama, Yutaka; Bloomer, T. E.*

Surface and Interface Analysis, 31(7), p.522 - 531, 2001/07

This study describes intergranular segregation and embrittlement in several model ferritic alloys doped with Mn, P, S and/or Cu subjected to neutron irradiation, irradiation-equivalent thermal ageing (ETA) and post-irradiation annealing (PIA). Neutron irradiation produced a larger amount of intergranular P segregation than S segregation. Intergranular C segregation remained small in all the as-irradiated alloys. A PIA study has shown that the P segregation in P-doped alloys subjected to lower temperature PIA proceeds via mobile P-interstitial complexes while the S segregation is controlled by vacancy-enhanced diffusion. The mechanisms of non-equilibrium intergranular segregation induced by neutron irradiation are discussed in light of coupled fluxes of point defects and impurities, and changes in the segregation capacity of grain boundaries. Small punch tests demonstrated how the impurity segregation or desegregation and hardening or softening induced by the irradiation, ETA and PIA influence intergranular embrittlement in the various ferritic alloys.
